Honoring the Greats: Why Is There a Tiny Bunny in Nelson Mandela’s Ear?

Local South African sculptorsĀ Andre Prinsloo and Ruhan Janse van Vuuren drew quite a controversy with one of their latest works, the statue of legendary Nelson Mandela.

The sculpture itself was produced with fine craft and depicted the late icon in appropriate manner, but it was another part that stirred up the public debate – a tiny rabbit in Mandela’s ear.

It might seem like quite an odd decision, but the sculptors considered it fitting to insert the little bronze bunny into the ear of the 30-foot (9 m) statue as a “small trademark” of their work. According to Baltimore Times, the artists were given a permission to engrave their signatures into the sculpture’s trousers, but the government said nothing about an ear hopper.

If you won’t take our word for it, check out some of the photos below and see it for yourself.
