Music To Our Hares: The 10 Most Important Rabbit Songs In The History Of Rabbit Songs

August 26, 2013

When trying to avoid cliches and some of the more apparent musical themes, artists tend to change their style and lyrical approach. They find new ways to express themselves or entirely new topics to delve into through their music.

Believe it or not, rabbits are occasionally included among off-the-beaten-track topics, dating back to the early days the 20th century. Sometimes they serve as metaphors (cryptic or otherwise), sometimes they’re specifically about rabbits, but one thing’s for certain – they’re bunny songs. So join us as we rundown of 10 greatest rabbit songs of all time.

10. Florence & The Machine – ‘Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)’

We’ll kick it off with younger representatives of the music scene – Florence & The Machine and their Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) tune. Indie rockers released the track as a single in June 2009, scoring No. 12 spot on the UK Singles Chart.

9. T-Rex – ‘Rabbit Fighter’

Marc Bolan and glam rock pioneers T-Rex unleashed their “Rabbit Fighter” song as a part of 1972 “The Slider” record, establishing their already solid rock star reputation.

8. Elton John – ‘Jack Rabbit’

Coming as a B-side track off Sir Elton’s iconic “Saturday Night’s Alright (for Fighting)” single, “Jack Rabbit” clocks in at less than mere two minutes, but has still easily made our top 10 as a genuine bunny tune. x`

I think of Elton as a tiger slippers for adults kind of guy, or even pink tiger paw slippers

7. Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band – ‘A Carrot is as Close as a Rabbit Gets to a Diamond’

Fueled by great talent and eccentricity, Captain Beefheart delivered a surprisingly subtle bunny-related tune titled “A Carrot is as Close as a Rabbit Gets to a Diamond” in 1980. Clocking in at less than two minutes, it’s still more than a worth listen.

6. John Lydon – ‘The Rabbit Song’

Not quite what you’d expect from a former Sex Pistols frontman, John Lydon’s (formerly Johnny Rotten) “The Rabbit Song” combines electronica influences into a unique track. If you’re a hardcore punk, you’re up for a surprise.

5. George Benson – ‘White Rabbit’

The title track of George Benson’s 1972 record “White Rabbit” gets to crack our list in half with it’s subtle, moody vibe. With nifty guitar tricks galore, the tune clearly demonstrates Benson’s talent and signature musical style.

4. Steeleye Span – ‘The Bonny Black Hare’

Folk rockers Steeleye Span scored a solid hit with their 2002 effort “Bloody Men.” Opening track “Bonny Black Hare” features a sturdy beat and as the title suggests – it’s a bunny tune!

3. Marilyn Manson – ‘Are You The Rabbit?’

We’re now in the heavy domain as shock rocker charged his way to No. 3 spot with his 2002 tune “Are You The Rabbit?” The track itself is featured on Manson’s 2007 effort “Eat Me, Drink Me.”

2. Cab Calloway – ‘Run Little Rabbit’

Further down in history, jazz icon Cab Calloway makes his big appearance on our list with a neat 1941 classic tune “Run Little Rabbit.” Know for his extraordinary talent and optimistic attitude, Mr. Calloway was truly a unique music figure.

1. Jefferson Airplane – ‘White Rabbit’

Inspired by Lewis Carroll’s globally-renowned novel “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland,” Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit” dropped in June 1967, earning nothing but praise and securing the group a massive following. It also earned the tune a No. 1 spot on our list as perhaps the ultimate rabbit-themed song.
